Objective To investigate the current conditions of fear of workplace conflict and professional identity in higher vocational nursing interns, and to explore the relationship between them.
Methods Using convenience sampling, third-year nursing interns from four higher vocational colleges in Hunan Province between December 2023 and May 2024 were recruited. Data were collected using the General Information Questionnaire, Workplace Violence Fear Scale and Professional Identity Scale for nursing students. The current conditions of fear of workplace conflict and professional identity in higher vocational nursing interns were assessed, and the correlation between them was discussed by Pearson correlation analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify independent factors influencing professional identity and to examine the effect of fear of workplace conflict on professional identity.
Results A total of 736 valid questionnaires were collected, and the scores of fear of workplace conflict and professional identity were (15.60±6.94) points and (64.20±9.63) points respectively. Correlation analysis suggested that in addition to the autonomy of career choice, the scores of fear of various conflict events in the workplace among higher vocational nursing interns were significantly inversely associated with the dimensions and total score of professional identity scale for nursing students (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis indicates that student leadership experience, place of origin, parents’ or relatives’ employment in the healthcare sector, reasons for choosing the nursing programme, level of interest in the chosen programme, the number of times conflicts in the hospital workplace have been witnessed or experienced, and scores for fear of workplace conflict were factors influencing the professional identity of nursing interns at vocational colleges.
Conclusion The professional identity in higher vocational nursing interns is in the upper middle level, but fear of workplace conflict is relatively common. Fear of workplace conflict is significantly negatively correlatetd with professional identity, education and management personnel should pay close attention to this and take appropriate intervention measures.
