The national development policy of building an innovation-led country in China places greater demands on high level medical professionals with expertise in both clinical practice and research. However, traditional evidence-based medicine courses for medical undergraduate students often suffer from a “theory-practice gap”. At the same time, medical undergraduates tend to start their research late, show little interest in it, and cannot apply their knowledge in practice, which severely hampers the development of their research and innovation skills. To address this issue, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, has developed Research Methods and Practices of Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine for medical undergraduates. This course adopts a “Five-Dimensional Integration” teaching style, focusing on “Early Intervention, Case-Driven Learning, Problem-Oriented Approach, Data Practice and Interest Guidance”. To take advantage of the “knowledge retention period” following methodology courses for undergraduate clinical medicine majors in the 4th year, the course adopts the classic studies in high-level journals as teaching examples. It leverages a provincial chronic disease data platform (medication for cardiovascular diseases) for progressive, hands-on data practice. An interdisciplinary mentorship pool is created to facilitate two-way student-mentor matching and provide long-term research guidance. The program also has a dynamic “short-term to long-term” evaluation system, including process-based evaluation, summative assessment of learning results, and a follow-up evaluation of students' research ability 2-3 years after college. Practice results show that this course effectively stimulates students’ interest in scientific research and helps students formulate scientific questions and solve problems from data. Students taking the optional course have published 4 SCI-indexed papers as the first author or co-author, including publications in top-tier journals such as the European Heart Journal. This paper summarizes the implementation path, innovative measures and preliminary effects of curriculum revision, aiming to provide reference practical experience for the early and systematic cultivation of scientific research and innovation competence in medical undergraduates in China.
